Fire Tower Road Is Open, Now Barrel-Free!

Fire Tower Road is now barrel-free.

All of the orange traffic barrels that drivers have navigated around for the past 2-1/2 years are now gone. Only a few traffic cones remain.

The busy Greenville thoroughfare went from 2 lanes to 5 in a 2.6-mile stretch from Memorial Drive to Corey Road.

Though often lamented for taking so long, the $20.8-million project is actually finishing up about a month early. Now Fire Tower Road is five-lanes from Charles Boulevard to Memorial Drive.

Construction crews say they still have to do some minor touch-up work on the project.

This road is the biggist joke. The Contractor who built is a joke. They have been woking on this project in some form for years and with all the stop lights in place every 1/2 mile apart it will be just like Greenville Blvd. It will take just as long to get down it as it always has if not longer. Stupid!

with all the traffic lights they put up out there the trip down firetower will be a nightmare. so what if it is 5or 6 lanes or whatever.

I can deal with the lights but I have to make a uturn to get into Dudleys Grant. They were one of the very few that didn't get a light or turn lane.

Thank you, thank you and thank you to all the people who made this new Firetower Road possible. You did a wonderful job without ever shutting down the entire route. True, many times we had to change lanes, etc., but how you executed such a wonderful project with no more delays than we experienced, I am amazed. No one, to my knowledge, was even injured with all of the traffic going by. Thank you again.

i think this road was designed and executed poorly..stop lights in the wrong place and who can miss those sewer lines (i think they are sewer lines) sticking up in the road...greenville will you replace my flat tires that i got from driving over one of those raised sewer lines???

I agree Jeff. And Anonymous, you hit the nail right on the head. I am sure these are the some of the same people that complained and said, "why don't they make Firetower 4 lanes, this is stupid, blah, blah. blah." Now they complain about how long it took or the u-turns. Medians prevent wrecks around here because people can't drive around here. Medians prevent people from easing out to make a left turn while someone else lets them in, then someone comes flying up the turn lane and either t-bone them or slams on brakes. I've seen it many times over the years so I only let people out if they are turning right.

I can't beleive all of the negative comments on this story. I would think people would be glad that the work is now complete seeing as how Fire Tower is a main thoroughfare in Greenville. But I guess it is like everything else people need to have something to complain about.

I didn't realize there were so many grouchy people. I am excited that it's over. It looks nice. Sure it was inconvenient. But it sure beats the bottleneck that we hit at Corey Rd. The open road straight through is nice. The lights are necessary because of the impatient morons on that road. I'd rather be held up by a red light than by an accident because someone cut someone else off.

Nothing like cutting a uturn everyday to go to work and come home. Whoever did the stop lights is stupid. It gave the green light yesterday to the field where the road doesn't even go.
