Neighbor Dispute Ends In Gunfire

A dispute between neighbors ends in gunfire with one in the hospital and the other in jail.

Greenville police say 59 year-old Melvin King shot Edward Battle with a shotgun Wednesday night during an argument at 1814-B Hopkins Drive. Battle is listed in fair condition.

King is charged with assault with a deadly weapon and is in the Pitt County Detention Center under a $100,000 bond. He has a cut on his chin police say he received when he fired the shotgun.

Police did not say what they were arguing about.

this is for frustrated: i see were u are coming from. I think it is crazy that this man's bond was only $14,000 for MUDER. And here we have a man who shoots a man not killing him and his bond is $100,000. That makes know sence. I went to school with ricky and no matter what know one deserves to die. They could have called the police first. I hope the man that killed Ricky gets LIFE!!!!!!!!

It sounds like Melvin King does not deserve to own a gun anymore if that's what he thinks is the solution. Whatever happened to punches being thrown and blood dripping from the eyes, nose, and face instead of the chest or arm or stomach due to a gunshot wound? To frustrated, did you ever see the criminal records of the two white guys in Grimesland? Did you realize that the stepfather was defending himself? He will have all his charges dropped before you know it. He should not have been charged to begin with. If I was Edward Battle, I would move out in a heartbeat. Melvin King deserves exactly what he got.

This has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with color frustrated. NOTHING. Judges make those decicions. Not every judge makes the same decisions. BTW: very well said Cat from Gboro. Lastly, I agree ray, if your going to fight, do it right! Don;t pick up a freaking gun or knife everytime you get in a confrontation. THAT IS STRAIGHT UP COWARDLY. That applies to ANYONE, ANYWHERE, ANYTIME!

Its called intent. Weapon used. How it was used. If you shoot somebody with a shotgun, odds are, your intent was to kill them. That can carry a higher charge just because there was obvious "intent" to kill, or inflict serious injury. That and all judicial officials are different. Some will put you under the jail for what other judges will give probation for.. That & as best I can tell, they may be thinking that the case with the stepson MIGHT have been a self defense case. He could go back to court under a different judge and have the book thrown at him. We'll see.

Just sounds like one Greenville low life trying to help rid Greenville of another low life.

Not knowing the situation... who knows why this happened. This could have been an escalating situation or 2 neighbors who hate each other.I recently had to go talk to a resident in my neighborhood about his step child and I had previously heard some stories about how hot tempered the guy is. You can cool believe I was legally CCing when I went to talk to him. In retrospect and things I learned weeks after wards I am amazed that he was as nice to me as he was considering that he has cussed out several of his immediate neighbors who tried to talk to him about his step child. But I guess it helps that I am 6'1" and while hes is not as tall as me we are built similar so he cant intimidate me with his size. So who knows what might have led up to what this.

"fustrated", this is the United States of America. Deal with it. This is the way it is. If you don't like it, do something about it or leave.
