Two Local Student Fall Short Of National Spelling Bee Semifinals

Two students from Eastern Carolina are out of the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C.

They came close to making it to the semifinals, which are taking place Thursday.

Mayee is in eighth grade at Hope Middle School in Greenville. She plays soccer and excels at Tae Kwon Do. The 13-year-old is no stranger to the bee. This was her third year in the finals.

John, who is 14, is in eighth grade at Elm City Middle School in Wilson County. He is a boy scout and plays football and tennis. He also competed in the North Carolina Geographic Bee in April.

The two are among 293 spellers from around the country who competed in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
