East Carolina University Commencement Tonight

East Carolina University will be holding their 100th spring commencement tonight.

This is the first time in recent years that ECU has held their graduation on a Friday night. The ceremony will begin at 6pm at Dowdy-Ficklen stadium, and the processional will begin at 6:30.

Lt. Gen. Gary l. North, Commander of the 9th Air Force and U.S. Air Forces Central and an East Carolina alumnus, will deliver the keynote address.

According to ECU's registrar's office, over three thousand students have applied for spring graduation.

Individual departments and colleges will hold their ceremonies tomorrow.

I agree with Bud. Folks at UNC get to see and hear Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu on Sunday. :)

First me and my wife (class of 2005) congratgulate all of the May 2009 graduates of this great university. All the studying, stress, and aggravation, and you get the reward of a four year degree. Congratgulations you deserved it. You are now one of us. ECU Alumni! Also, we wish you the best of luck in finding a job within this horrible economy that the United States is in.

Okay no offense to any military folks out there, but I went to one of these events in 2007 when they had the commander of Cherry Point as the keynote speaker...all she talked about was how being in the military is a great job and basically that the new graduates should join up. It was like they were at a recruiting speech instead of a graduation event. I know we're in eastern NC, heart of the US Military, but surely ECU can do better than to keep bringing in these people as speakers. The graduates need a speaker that can tell them about what they can expect in the real world and how to deal with it; not when a terrorist attack is coming and when we're going to invade Iran and that they need to join up to really help America. Leave politics out of this ceremony please, and get a useful keynote speaker. It sounds to me like ECU is trying to save a dollar by bringing in speakers who don't command thousands. I'm not bashing the military, I'm just saying...
