Tornado Confirmed In Pitt County; Cleanup Continues

More Storm Photos on Carolina Camera

PITT COUNTY, NC -- The National Weather Service confirms that a tornado touched down in eastern Pitt County Tuesday afternoon, damaging a home and several outbuildings.

A weather service meteorologist says an EF-1 twister touched down in Calico with estimated wind speed of 105 to 110 miles per hour. It's estimated the tornado was on the ground for about a half hour as it crossed over Highway 43.

The tornado pushed the house off its foundation and ripped off the roof. No one was at home when the storm hit.

The twister was reported near Calico about 5:30 p.m., about 10 miles east of Ayden.

Highway 43 was closed earlier and is back open, but crews say expect parts to be shut down throughout Tuesday night as they get downed power lines back up.
