Eastern Carolina Hispanics Concerned For Family In Mexico

For many people in eastern Carolina the Swine Flu outbreak in Mexico has really hit home.

Mayra Rodriguez owns a store in Greenville. She's originally from Mexico and still has family there. She says she has been in contact with them since the outbreak of the flu. And although they live about 24 hours away from Mexico City, their city has still cancelled school and many people are wearing masks to protect themselves.

Rodriguez says it's been a scary experience for them. She says she hopes her family continues to take precautions to stay safe.

As of now the death toll in Mexico has risen to 149.

At this rate, I still have more problems with the Chinese and Japanese more than any other race/ethnic group. Also at this rate, Watch out Canada. Canada may be getting some swine flu coming in a few days I am sure. If it gets that bad in the U.S., please send me to Australia for at least a few weeks.

Are the illegals still being allowed to enter the country? Is ANYONE(Hispanic) allowed to enter the USA? This WILL be a problem.!!!

I agree with Voter and Dave. I am so sick of going into walmart and seeing hispanics being busloaded in...knowing 3/4 of them (if not all, are illegal). Every one of them are pushing carts with 5 gallons of milk in 'em and trying to control the 10 little heads running around them. Then they go to the check out swiping that card with their manicured hands, they got their hair did, two cell phones attached to their waist.....it's ridiculous. I'm sick of busting my butt all week to ensure that they can get free food so they can afford their manicures and pedicures. IF YOUR LEGAL FINE, WELCOME TO AMERICA; BUT IF YOUR NOT, GO HOME AND STOP DRAINING US OF EVERYTHING WE HAVE.

If only it where true dave. Too many freebies and handouts here for them to go back. They only leave long enough to take their dollars back to el mexico and then return to get some more. You got to work a little harder is all. Maybe I should denouce my citizenship and become a foreigner and see if it would work for me. I doubt it.

First I just want to clarify, not all Mexicans are illegal. I am half Mexican, and really, I look more like my dad (who is not Mexican at all, in fact he is half white, half polynesian) than my mom (who is Mexican). However, since my skin is "brown" everyone assumes I am an illegal Mexican who does not speak English. I was BORN here and I ONLY speak English. In fact, I am going to ECU to become and English teacher. I find it extremely disturbing that people would comment that all Mexicans need to go back to Mexico. Many were born here and have family roots that go back generations. Illegal immigrants need to come here legally, I am not arguing with that. People just need to realize, some people were born here, contribute to society, only speak English, and have never even been to Mexico, even though they look "Mexican." Please, stick to the issue at hand. People are DYING. A little toddler has died in Texas. We should all be praying, not blaming Mexicans for this.

Well, since its also here in the US now, we need to concentrate on the US. If people are sick stay home, don't go travel around the world. Makes no sense at all, to get others sick.

It's so sad that people are dying, and people use this as an opportunity to spew hatred against an entire nationality. Civilization didn't begin in America, and at some point all of us or our ancestors were immigrants. If you have hate to the point where you have no sympathy, that's between you and God, but regardless of what races or nationalities you think should be in America, people are suffering, so spread your negativity on another forum. I pray that all affected are healed and comforted by God's everlasting grace, mercy, and love. And, I pray that ALL people will realize that one God created us all and wants us to love one another as He loves us.

My husband has family in Mexico and he also is concerned. As for him going home to check he was just there several weeks ago. He goes to see his family appx every 3 years and before you get your drawers in a wad, he isn't taking any of your tax money with him. He is LEGAL. Not all Hispancs are illegal, so you really should stop judging by skin color and judge by the person's reputation. As stated before not all illegals are Hispanic. As for me, I am a full bloodied American, born and breed here in the good ole USA and I don't regret being married to a Hispanic at all. Treated better by this man than would ever be treated by some of you. Have a good day!!!!

Not that I wish sickness on anyone, but it would be interesting to compare swine flu cases between Mexicans in the US and Mexicans in Mexico. To see if it is just as deadly for them either way. If not then maybe they can use that to create some kind of vaccine for Mexico.
