Clearing Up Misconceptions About Swine Flu

The word of the swine flu is spreading faster than the actual virus, so what have you heard?

Dr. Ramsey is the medical director for the infection control at the Brody School of Medicine.

He spoke with WITN on Monday to clear up some misconceptions about the swine flu virus. Dr. Ramsey says flu shots will not protect you from the virus.

He says people cannot contract the swine flu virus through eating pork. You can only get the virus through human to human contact.

Dr. Ramsey says products like Tamiflu will treat the swine flu.

Just a few weeks ago, swine flu could only pass from swine to human. Now only from human to human, something stinks here and it not the pigs.

Let me clear up a misconception for you. As many illegal mexican border crossers as we have pouring into eastern North Carolina every day, they will plop this desease in your lap before you can eat a burrito and have your hedge trimmed.

The ER is the last place you should go. We are trying to treat MIs,MVCs,lacerations, fractures and any other life threating problems! Please be aware if you come to the ER you may have to sit in the lobby wear a mask on and wait!!!or you could sit at home take Tylenol and drink lots of fluids.

Clarification please. I notice that Dr. Ramsey is encouraging people to "immediately" go to the ER if they have "flu-like symptoms" isn't this in conflict with the CDC, WHO, etc. news conferences where they say NOT to go to the ER unless you normally would? Aren't they encouraging people who are only mildly ill to stay home so that they don't spread the "flu" any farther?
