Many parents say volunteer coaches are a critical part in helping out at school sporting events. But do you really know who is supervising your children?
That question is in the spotlight after a volunteer girls soccer coach in Swansboro, Onslow County was arrested and charged with contacting a 16-year old girl over the computer and then having a sexual relationship with her.
Onslow County does require background checks on volunteer coaches. Other counties like Pitt do not.
Heather Mayo with Pitt County Schools says they do not require criminal background checks or drug tests for their volunteer coaches because of the cost. In total those tests would cost the county about $50.00 per person, and she says that's just something they couldn't afford and they don't want to make the volunteer pay.
Mayo says head and assistant coaches do have those tests and it is the expectation that they will be responsible for the volunteers.
