Earth Day At ECU

East Carolina University now has a brand new addition to its landscaping, some trees to celebrate Earth Day.

In an event hosted by Joyner Library faculty and staff, ECU students and faculty gathered this morning in front of the library to plant a new tree in honor of Earth Day.

Matt Reynolds, part of the green task force, says this tree is a symbol of all the hard work that the green task force has done throughout the year. He says all the small environmental efforts that people do can make a big difference.

Other areas of the campus will also receive new trees. The trees were donated by ECU faculty and students.

As a proud ECU alum, I just have to say that the flipping light switches, unneccessary printing, and recycling ideas should have been in existense for years and years. It does not take someone to be educated for something simple such as that. That was a good deed that the organization out of Washington did. In addition I got to say LETS GO PIRATES.

It's a shame that all the facts are not being reported correctly. The tree was donated by an organization out of Washington, NC, not by ECU faculty and students and not with state/university monies. The Library's Green Task Force is the Library's response to the University's environmental sustainability effort. The committee looks for ways to educate the library faculty and staff to save money and maintains sustainability such as being conscious of unnecessary printing, flipping light switches whem leaving the room, and recycling ideas. The Library also hosted a presentation by the Pamlico-Tar River Association and employees participated in a roadside cleanup late this afternoon. In this time of budget crisis, what a positive way to contribute to the community! Way to go, Library Pirates!

Why doesn't ECU get some new busses instead of wasting money on a tree that won't grow for another 10 years?

The library is obviously grossly over staffed and greatly over funded as hard workers and tight budgets wouldn't be able to spend time on a "green committee" or ponder another means to throw away tax payer dollars.

With all the budget cuts they go and buy a tree? The area around the library is full of trees. Another waste of money!
