Miss USA 2009 Kristen Dalton appeared on the "Today Show" on Wednesday morning.
Dalton, an ECU student and a native of Wilmington, N.C., was crowned Miss USA 2009 on Sunday in Las Vegas.
The Today Show hosts asked Dalton about the controversy surrounding Miss California. Carrie Prejean appeared on the "Today Show" Tuesday, defending her answer to a question about gay marriage during the pageant.
Dalton said on "Today" that she was proud of Miss California for speaking from her heart.
Al Roker asked Dalton whether she was surprised by the political nature of the questions during this year's pageant. Dalton replied that she was pleased at the tone of the questions, saying the prove that Miss USA is "fresh and relevant," and that the contestants are both beautiful and intelligent.
Matt Lauer joked that he was going to ask Dalton how she would have responded to the question of whether all states should legalize gay marriage, but instead ended the interview with congratulating Dalton.
Dalton will compete in the Miss Universe Pageant in August.
