17 People Died On NC Roads This Weekend

It was a deadly weekend for drivers on North Carolina roadways, 17 people were killed in nine separate crashes including at least two people from our area.

According to The North Carolina Department of Crime Control and Public Safety the largest accident was in Transylvania County on US 64, six people were killed. A crash in Columbus County on NC 214 killed three other people, alcohol was a factor in that one. Then a double fatality in Wayne County on US 13 left two motorcyclists dead; 59 year old Charles Poe from Greenville and 57 year old Lenwood Whitley of Chocowinity. Of these crashes, seven of the victims were not wearing seat-belts.

According to statistics 318 people have lost their lives on North Carolina roads during 2009, of those 124 were not wearing seat belts.
