Suspected Gunman Had Long Criminal History

The man lawmen say killed his girlfriend Tuesday and then shot two deputies, one fatally, has a long criminal history.

Records filed with the North Carolina Department of Corrections show 43-year-old Clarence Douglas Phillips was first convicted of a crime in 1983 with a felony count of breaking and entering. That same month, records show Phillips was charged with driving under the influence and damage to property. Phillips was 17 years old at the time.

Philips was convicted in September 1984 with misdemeanor charges of drunk and disorderly conduct and resisting an officer. Another drunk and disorderly conviction was handed down against Phillips in January 1987, along with a damage to property conviction.

Records show Phillips spent three months behind bars in late 1986 and early 1987 for assault with a deadly weapon.

Phillips was put on probation in 1993 after a conviction of drug possession.

The next conviction against Phillips was not until 1999, when he was found guilty of assault of a female.

Phillips spent 20 months in prison from 2004 - 2005 after getting convicted of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and communicating threats.

The criminals have the rights. The system is placing band-aids on large gashes and sending criminals back into society knowingly that society is dealing with a ticking bomb. Indeed, the officers' save us money.

A career criminal who was allowed to continue to roam the streets because of bleeding heart liberal policies. 2 people dead and one seriously injured because of Liberal politics. It is the same liberal politics that is causing people to be laid off at PCS right now. Change your voting habits folks. It is obvious that the Dems live in some sort of fantasy world.

Missy, it sounds like Doug should have been in that mental hospital. You expect/ask people not to judge him after he killed 2 people. That is not even logical. Families are shattered, lives have been lost..

I also knew doug...i never would have thought he would do something like this..but he did...he will face his judgement so don't judge him yourself if you didn't know him...his past is his past..i have seen alot worse out there..that should be behind bars or a mental hospital..i'm sorry for the loss he caused..but his family is suffering also..think about them..all i can say is RIP Doug..God Bless You
