Mom Accused Of Severely Burning Toddler Son

A mother is in jail, accused of severely burning her 23-month old child.

Melissa Johnson is charged with felony child abuse.

Greenville police say they received a tip that the toddler was being abused at 406-A Darden Drive. Police say they found the child had been severely burned on his back, and then doctors discovered other areas of his body where the boy had been burned.

Two other children, ages 3 and 9, have been removed from the home.

The boy is in stable condition at Pitt County Memorial Hospital while the 25-year-old mother's bond has been set at $100,000.

To sad,sad,sad.. I never said our current system wasn't warped, just wanted to know why the fact of if she was on welfare or not was even brought up. Everyone just naturally assumed she was on welfare, because we all know that it is only the ones on welfare that do things like this **rolls eyes**

rachel-"if you have one baby and you are not married and the government is paying for that child and you to live, you SHOULD NOT be able to have anymore children till you can afford it" So if someone is married with 6 kids living off of the government that is ok?

I think that the 'child did not ask to be here' is exactly the point that some posters are making about tax dollars and welfare benefits. Our current system rewards, and almost encourages, young girls to have a baby so they can receive help with housing, food and other basic items. Unfortunately, it's all too easy to have children and many have them without consideration about the responsibility and commitment involved. This story makes me sad and I hope social services will do the right thing and ensure that the victim and his siblings are safe and have what they need to recover both physically and emotionally.

For those of you posting about welfare in here, what has welfare got to do with this? It doesn't say in the article that she is on assistance, she does not have a tattoo on her forehead that says "I am on welfare". So where did that come from? I just don't get it. Some that post here are just about as bad as the one who committed the crime in this case. A child was hurt, and all some of you are worried about is that tax dollars went to pay for them. For one: It is not the child's fault, they did not ask to be here. 2. all people are capable of abuse, not just poor people, ALL people. And 3. you keep saying "my tax dollars", newsflash, they are no longer your dollars, they are the governments dollars. And for that sometimes I am glad, because I think that some of you would very well let the kids go without just to prove a point to the mother. Which leads us back to #1 The child did not ask to be here!

To S in ENC, I agree with you. There are so many elderly people in nursing homes or that need help and they don't get it and they actually deserve it. Old people that have worked all their lives that have no choice to go to a nursing home then their ss checks are taken to pay their bill and they don't even get spending money or can get out to spend to buy them lotions, soaps, nice nightgowns. ITS SAD!

I notice my response to a particular generic poster didn't make it. ..I wonder why... since I was the one that was attacked! I was only explaining to this person, the difference between, (past participle form) and (simple past tense form) But because -To Burn is an Irregular Verb ..burnt and burned are both past simple and past participle and either word can be USED! ..BUT the topic is ..Mom Accused Of Severely Burning Toddler Son!!!! Not my POST! Get your mind off me, and get a life! And if WITN decides not to print this one either... then take down Posted by: Anonymous on Mar 11, 2009 at 10:24 PM ~Alpha Female~, it's "burned", not "burnt". And you are educated? ---- because I'm being called out, attacked, and flamed per your rules #6

I am on the same page as Rachel in this matter and I believe that we are in the majority concerning this subject...These so-called mothers are doing nothing but having more babies so they can collect more money from tax-payng citizens...the more kids they have, the more they collect...If only our government officials would have enough courage to stop this never-ending cycle of abuse then welfare could be cut out forever....If you have kids, support them YOURSELF....I,too,am sick of this...DSS is the most useless organization there is...if anyone needs help,it should be the elderly we assist;otherwise,do it yourself & quit having babies & living in projects off my tax dollars.
