New Date For Kindergarten Entrance

Pitt County Schools have started enrolling this fall's kindergarteners. Registration will continue through March 11.

Pitt County Schools officials say there is a change this year due in the date by which students must turn 5. State law requires children to be 5 years old by August 31 to enroll in kindergarten, starting with the 2009-10 school year. The Department of Public Instruction says the revised law moves the birthday requirement up by a month and a half to make sure students are ready for formal school when they begin kindergarten.

To register your child, you will need:
• Proof of age (certified birth certificate or other document approved by the principal)
• Court order for guardianship (if student is living with someone other than the parent)
• Proof of residency (two documents)

Officials say early registration will ensure bus transportation on the first day of school.

Yeah I don't agree either. I think there should be exceptions for some students. Daniell it sucks that ur child will have to be the one of the OLDEST people in her class but worse then that.. it sucks that she has to sit at home an entire year just because her birthday is 6 days off.. enroll her for the first week of school in like MD and then come back to NC they have to let her continue. Just a thought..

I agree with Daniell. I have a birthday near the end of October. I started school when I was 4 and graduated on time, without failing any grades. Went on to college and completed that in 4 years. Each child is different. Why not give them the option of at least testing in. Some kids are so ready by the time they are 5 that they are completely bored in Kindergarten and so far ahead of the others that it is a completely wasted year. Then they lose interest...

I disagree with the date change all the way back to August. My daughter will be 5 September 13. She is very smart she knows all her letters, numbers to 20, all her colors, shapes, she call add small numbers, and she can write her name. At 3 years old she could tie her shoe thats a lot more than I can say for a lot of kids starting school. I think she is more than ready to start school this year and I dont think she should have to wait another year.

It's about time they changed the date requirement. October was absolutely nuts.
