Charges Dropped In ECU Snowball Case

The only East Carolina University student arrested during a mass snowball fight back in January went before a judge Tuesday.

18-year-old Steven Bass had all charges dismissed during a district court hearing.

Bass was charged with assault on a government official and resisting, delaying and obstructing a law enforcement officer after the campus snowball fight got out of control on January 20th.

University police say some 200 students were involved in the melee, with some of the snowballs contained oranges and ice.

Officials said a campus police officer used pepper spray on a group of students that rushed officers trying to make an arrest.

I love checking on this site periodically and seeing the "chat room warriors" duking it out. In the words of Col. Nathan Jessup, "I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to someone who rises and sleeps under the very blanket of freedom which I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I'd rather you just say thank you and be on your way or grab a weapon and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a dang what you think you are entitled to!"

I love how people defend the actions of some of the students with "it was just a snow ball fight". So, the next time it snows, drive your car up College Hill or go join in on the snow ball fight, and when you get hit with a snow ball that has a rock in it, an orange, or ice, don't call the cops, because hey, it's just a snow ball fight.

Mr. Humberstone if it was one of your children. That threw the " Snowball ". I would like to see you send one or two of your own Children male ot female to 3-5 years in a Federal Prison. I have seen Military Prisons. I know you would be begging the judge not to send them there, and you would take there place in prison. You would do anything not to send them there, and don't tell me you wouln't, because you would not be telling the truth.

Mr. Humberstone--how dare you call me un-American! Them's real fighting words. BTW--I'm a Republican (whose party has been hijacked by morons). And furthermore, WITN is not a conservative news website, nor is NBC. You need to quit watching FauxNews and get out more.

I'm hoping Mr. Humberstone is writing satire. His overt arrogance and angst towards todays youth reminds me of an elderly cartoon man shaking his fist on the porch.

This is an absolute travesty, and sends the alarming message that kids today can get away with anything, and will only be coddled and greeted with an "it's okay Johnny" mentality. What this individual did was attack a law enforcement officer, with malicious intent. He should be expelled from that university, his parents fined upwards of $7500 and do 3-5 years in a federal penitentiary. If you want to lower the crime rate, it's time for punishment, not your sissified, liberal pacifist nonsense. I do have faith in human nature, however, and no doubt this kid will end up in prison at some point in his life - because the values he is being taught center entirely around "it's ok to break the law," before being coddled. Furthermore, you people on here saying he doesn't deserve prison time are entirely un-American, and I do not appreciate your socialist/liberal/tree-hugging banter on this, a conservative news netwok web site.
