OFFICIALS: Student Sent To Hospital After Punching Officer

A school resource officer used physical force when authorities say he was punched in the face by a student.

The 16-year-old ninth grader at J.H. Rose High School faces school disciplinary charges, as well as likely criminal charges, that's according to a Pitt County Schools spokeswoman.

Heather Mayo says it started around 12:50 p.m. when the assistant principal stopped two students suspected of skipping class. One student cooperated with the administrator, but Mayo says the other refused to give his name.

School resource officer Carlton Joyner was called and was escorting the student to the office when Mayo says the student turned around an punched the officer in the face, drawing blood.

Greenville police Cpl. Kip Gaskins says the student then began to fight with the officer. Gaskins says the two fell to the floor causing the student to get a bloody nose.

Police say charges of assault on a government official are forthcoming against the student.

At the student's request, he was transported to Pitt County Memorial Hospital and his mother notified. Mayo says Joyner went home to change his bloody uniform and was expected to return to school this afternoon.

This happened about 3-1/2 hours after the high school was placed on lockdown Wednesday morning when a police chase spilled onto its campus.

The thing ya'll upper and older senile adults have to understand is that this is a new generation. The things that happen back then in your day, ain't even fedin to go down in ours. It doesn't matter about if we were taught well or whatever..the world is coming to an end. These are the last an evil days. Most of us young folks just don't care. So to kill the mouth up here, We the genenration that's going to determine where you gonna be in the world.

TO Jackson , I say you are right ! Most thuggies and gang banger's there are either dead or locked up way before they are 21!! Sad but true. And most are Black and don't come from a good home! You can tell the ones who are loved and taught respect and who to be responsible and not a burden on society and the prison system! There are White ones and Hispanic ones too!I remember when we did not need police walking the halls or gangs ! We had our clicks and guys we hung out with but we were RESPECTABLE AND GOOD KIDS who knew right from wrong! There were mischief and pranks but never guns or violence like today. Take god out of the schools and discipline away from the teachers and principals and you get hell and more hell for juvenile delinquents where mama or daddy cant do a thing with them! Start at age when they are walking to teach them respect and manners and right from wrong. This is the key for success and most of all give them love and attention! This is what they need!!

I have asked as a parent and teacher over and over to have more resource officers in the middle and high schools. our schools are not safe, and no one listens.
