Greenville Police: Violent Crime Down, Property Crime Up

Greenville Police say the latest crime statistics for 2008 show violent crime down five-percent while property crime went up two-percent.

Greenville Police Corporal Kip Gaskins says, "I think we're doing very well if you look at the numbers. As the population continues to grow, but the crime has kind of leveled off some and even dropped off some in some instances."

Gaskins credits the crime cutback to a growing intelligence and analysis department. He says police are able to dissect crime patterns and trends, but there is still that eternal dilemma that you will never fully get rid of crime.

Gaskins says more community involvement will continue to help. Gaskins says, "The citizens input, the citizens involvement...them coming to our meetings and getting information from us will be a great thing. So I think more citizens involvement in the upcoming year will be a great tool that we can use."

Greenville resident Annette Taft is among those eager to see new programs put in place. She fears summer may be a true indication into Greenville's crime. "That's when everybody is out of school and everybody is walking the neighborhoods and out. And I think that's really gonna tell if crime has slowed down the pace."

I guess there was also another spike in "Suspicious Avtivity". The books; can be cooked to, say what ever they want them to say.I support our fine officers, even though I have doubts about the Cheif & City Council.
