Young Angler Shatters Shad Record In Grifton

An 11-year-old Pitt County girl has caught the first shad in her division in the annual Grifton Shad Festival Hickory Shad fishing contest for the seventh consecutive year.

That has never happened before, in any age division, in the contest's 39-year history.

The angler is Jenna Barrow of Winterville. She takes part in the female youth division of the annual contest. Jenna caught her shad this week.
It weighed 11 ounces and measured 13 inches. That's four and a half ounces and two and a half inches shorter than her winning fish last year.

Jenna was fishing with her dad in Contentnea Creek for about 20 minutes when she snagged the shad.

Both the male adult and female adult division of the contest now have entries.

Linda Williams caught her shad Tuesday. It weighed in at 14 ½ ounces and was 14 ½ inches long.

Her picture is below. To learn more about the contest and the festival, click on the related link below.

Thanks for posting the link to our Grifton Shad Festival information! The festival really has "something for everyone". Most events are free and outdoors and all are family oriented fun. It's lots more than fish and fishing. Half of the 40 events are arts-related such as clogging, craft show, traditional Mexican dancing, art show, band concerts and of course the parade. This year the Shad Toss will be near the boat landing and a new Pet Show will be there too. Free crafts for kids and a kiddie "fishing pool" are features near the pony rides and petting zoo. Check the schedule on our website.

"female fisher person"...? Don't you think "correctness" has gone too far? Must have been a democrat writing that story.
