An 11-year-old Pitt County girl has caught the first shad in her division in the annual Grifton Shad Festival Hickory Shad fishing contest for the seventh consecutive year.
That has never happened before, in any age division, in the contest's 39-year history.
The angler is Jenna Barrow of Winterville. She takes part in the female youth division of the annual contest. Jenna caught her shad this week.
It weighed 11 ounces and measured 13 inches. That's four and a half ounces and two and a half inches shorter than her winning fish last year.
Jenna was fishing with her dad in Contentnea Creek for about 20 minutes when she snagged the shad.
Both the male adult and female adult division of the contest now have entries.
Linda Williams caught her shad Tuesday. It weighed in at 14 ½ ounces and was 14 ½ inches long.
