NEW INFO: Robersonville Teen Dies In Pirates Place Shooting

Greenville police say a Robersonville teen died in what appears to be an accidental shooting.

It happened Friday morning at an apartment complex that is popular with East Carolina University students. Police say Equam Brown, who was 19 years old, died shortly after noon at Pitt County Memorial Hospital.

Greenville police received a "shots fired call" around 8:00 a.m. Friday morning at Pirates Place Townhomes on Charles Boulevard. Sergeant Joe Friday tells WITN News that several people were inside an apartment when a gun went off, striking Brown.

Police say preliminary investigation by detectives indicates it is an accidental self-inflicted shooting. But police say the investigation is continuing and the case is being treated as a death investigation.

Witnesses told detectives that Brown was visiting residents who live in that apartment. A handgun was found at the scene.

Friday says their investigation shows that Brown thought the gun was unloaded and the teen shot himself in the head. "The safety issues involved we don't know for certain at this point, it's so early in the investigation whether or not alcohol was involved, but we're in the process of investigating everything to find out," said Friday.

Sgt. Friday says the victim is not an ECU student.

Immature people (children, those with a childlike mind, irresponsible people, etc) should not be in possession of guns, much less play with guns. This was not something that a mature, right thinking adult would have done. Did the parents know that this young man was in possession of a weapon? They should have known he wasn't ready for the responsibility of handling a firearm. It is sad that someone didn't intervene before the lack of maturity and responsibility caused this to occur. b-rad, you aren't so rad, just an another immature boy who thinks he can front and get some respect. It ain't workin'. The bottom line is, he wasn't mature enough to be handling a firearm and it was a senseless death so maybe you should hold your stuff or comments in your mouth as well.

how do you...accidentally point a gun to your own head and shoot yourself? I read that this was a self-inflicted accidental gunshot to the head..? sad as this death is, don't most people know not to do this, even if you know a gun isn't loaded? Seems like such a waste of that nice boy's life. Maybe we need to continue to implement gun safety classes into secondary schools as well - apparently they need to be educated more to prevent this from happening again.

To the Brown family: My heart is very saddened by the loss of your loved one. I can,t tell you the heaviness and the weight that is laid upon my sons and daughter by this tramatic death. I hope this will be a wake up call for all of Equam friends that are left behind. Through this hardship and forbearance let this be a lesson to all of you. Please don,t try to figure out why this happened but just accept the fact that Equam is gone but never forgotten! To: Quan, Chad, Doochie, Kia, Justin, Aaron B, and too many others to call by name, Know that God feels your grief, heals your sorrow, and can mend the wounded, the broken and even the contrite spirits. Stay together, not apart! R.I.P Equam
