Greenville police say a Robersonville teen died in what appears to be an accidental shooting.
It happened Friday morning at an apartment complex that is popular with East Carolina University students. Police say Equam Brown, who was 19 years old, died shortly after noon at Pitt County Memorial Hospital.
Greenville police received a "shots fired call" around 8:00 a.m. Friday morning at Pirates Place Townhomes on Charles Boulevard. Sergeant Joe Friday tells WITN News that several people were inside an apartment when a gun went off, striking Brown.
Police say preliminary investigation by detectives indicates it is an accidental self-inflicted shooting. But police say the investigation is continuing and the case is being treated as a death investigation.
Witnesses told detectives that Brown was visiting residents who live in that apartment. A handgun was found at the scene.
Friday says their investigation shows that Brown thought the gun was unloaded and the teen shot himself in the head. "The safety issues involved we don't know for certain at this point, it's so early in the investigation whether or not alcohol was involved, but we're in the process of investigating everything to find out," said Friday.
Sgt. Friday says the victim is not an ECU student.
