UNC Changes Health Insurance Over Abortion

The University of North Carolina will let students remove coverage for elective abortions from their university-sponsored health insurance after a national group complained about the coverage.

UNC system President Erskine Bowles on Thursday directed a student insurance company to contact students who have bought a policy this fall and give them the chance to opt out of that coverage.

Students for Life of America started a petition drive this week demanding the UNC Board of Governors remove the abortion provision. Group President Kristan Hawkins said students shouldn't be required to pay for coverage that runs counter to their conscience.

The board agreed last summer to require students on 16 campuses to have some health insurance coverage starting this school year.

Right you are , Anonymous. Yoo-Yoos making this an abortion issue, when it clearly is not. Also, trying to tie this to Obama, when anyone who has bothered to read in the last two years knows it has nothing to do with the Health Care bill. But let the lies keep coming-pretty soon people will get tired of them "crying wolf".

Snake, You are so rediculous! The board made this requirement last summer-2009. Obama's health care didn't even pass until March of 2010 and takes effect in 2011! This IS one of the reasons it was needed. Colleges could no longer obsorb the costs of infirmaries and had to enact these insurance requirements. Secondly, this is "private" insurance-not government-so until abortion is outlawed, those purchasing have the right to buy the coverage they want. Finally, after the health care plan takes effect-parents will be able to keep their own insurance on their college student/children until 26yo, which will also help the costs to the colleges. You people just look for anything you can-you sound so ignorant!!! Mom, I respect your views, but that isn't the law of the land right now, so having this insurance coverage is NOT a crime. BTW-You might want to look up that law in Alaska-Palin (I'm sure your are a fan) has the most liberal abortion law in the country! She did nothing to change it.

Isurance compamies have been covering abortion for years now. Students can opt out if they don't want it. This is not Obama Care. Please read the story.
