Before heading off to Hollywood and becoming famous, Andy Griffith was an English teacher in Goldsboro, Wayne County.
In 2002 the Wayne County Museum honored him on their wall of fame, noting his contributions to the youth of Wayne County during his few years as a teacher for the school system. He taught there from 1949-1953.
Christopher Lawson is the assistant director at the museum. He says, "We have people come and they say they had a relative of theirs or somebody went to school when he was here or they remember the show. He was in this area and he made it so big later and I think that's important for Goldsboro and Wayne County and Eastern North Carolina."
The museum has items from their area like the bell that was in an episode of Matlock from Cherry Hospital.
While teaching at Goldsboro High School, Griffith, who was raised in the Baptist Church, directed the choir at First Baptist church in downtown Goldsboro.
