We're getting our first up close look at Ocracoke following Hurricane Sandy.
Wednesday was the first day that ferry operations opened for the public to the island.
WITN was on the first ferry to leave Cedar Island at 7:30 a.m. to make its way to Ocracoke.
Ocracoke resident Matt Devan was also making his way back after leaving the island because of Sandy. He told us he was worried about their home. "Big concern is the flooding. So it shouldn't have been too bad but we had a vehicle that might have been moved through water by a friend ."
The good news for the Devan family, once they got to Ocracoke they found their home and car were just fine.
Vince O'Neal has lived on the island all his life and owns Pony Island Restaurant. He says Sandy lived up to her superstorm status. "People got surprised a little bit about how bad it really was and how close it really did come.
Officials say flooding and debris were the two main impacts on the island from Sandy but the water is gone and debris is getting cleaned up.
