NEW INFO: PCMH Becoming Vidant Medical Center

There will soon be a new name for the largest hospital in Eastern Carolina.

University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina announced this afternoon that it's becoming Vidant Health. At the same time the health system says Pitt County Memorial Hospital will become Vidant Medial Center.

Vidant is the Latin word for life, according to the hospital. The change begins on January 25th.

While the name of the hospital is changing, part of its existing name will be retained. It will be called the Pitt Memorial Building on the Vidant Medical Center's campus.

In September, the hospital announced it was holding off on changing its name to UHS Medical Center. Another UHS, Universal Health Services in Pennsylvania, has already trademarked the UHS initials.

PCMH was named in honor of World War II veterans, and some county leaders and veterans opposed the name change when it was first announced.

University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina includes Albemarle Health, Beaufort Hospital, Bertie Memorial Hospital, Chowan Hospital, Duplin General Hospital, Heritage Hospital, Outer Banks Hospital, Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Pungo Hospital, Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, University Home Health and Hospice; ViQuest and physician practices, and is affiliated with the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.

The new names for those hospitals are: Vidant Beaufort Hospital, Vidant Bertie Hospital, Vidant Chowan Hospital, Vidant Duplin Hospital, Vidant Edgecombe Hospital, Vidant Pungo Hospital, and Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

The Outer Banks Hospital in Nags Head and Albemarle Health in Elizabeth City will not change their names.
