Two vacationers from Pennsylvania were killed late this morning when troopers say they were hit by an out of control vehicle on the outer banks.
1st Sgt. Jeff Gordon says the accident happened on Highway 12 in Currituck County near the water treatment plant around 11:30 a.m.
Gordon says Troy Bowman of Ashburn, Virginia was heading north on Highway 12 when they say he fell asleep. His SUV ran off the right shoulder and hit the two pedestrians.
The Highway Patrol says Wesley & Elizabeth Martin of Lancaster, Pennsylvania were walking with their backs to the traffic on a paved pedestrian and bicycle path.
The 50-year-old Bowman has been charged with careless and reckless driving and two counts of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.
Troopers say Bowman's 10 year old son was with him in the vehicle, while the Martins' four children, ranging in age from 11 to 18, were on the beach with family members when the accident occurred.
