Toll On Virginia Expressway To Outer Banks Tripling

Millions of tourists making their way to North Carolina

Millions of tourists making their way to North Carolina's Outer Banks will soon pay more to drive through Virginia to get there.

The toll on the 16-mile Chesapeake Expressway is tripling to $6 each way on summer weekends starting Sunday. The expressway is the primary route tourists visiting the Outer Banks from Richmond, Washington, D.C., and the Northeast take. It extends from Interstate 64 to the North Carolina border.

Chesapeake officials say the fare hike is necessary to maintain the 10-year-old road and pay off the loans the city took out to build it.

Tourism leaders in North Carolina's beach communities say the hike is too much, too soon. Many on the Outer Banks are telling visitors how to avoid paying by taking the last exit before the toll station.

Pay $12 to shop in Norfolk? As long as Battlefield Blvd. exists, I'll use it. Soon it will be as congested as before the tollway was built.

NC should charge VA for coming to our state they are using our beaches and roads, I know they bring in money to the OBX but let NC have some of the benefits of the Tolls, they already act like they own the OBX

Virginia is STILL paying off loans on a 10 yr old section of highway ? Sounds like they should have had the funds BEFORE building the ole highway. Guess they are no different than most of the states, go into debt for everything with no payback plan. Stay dependant to Washington DC for highway funds. Continue being the governments slave.

That is absurd. First, NC Outer Banks Residents should Boycott Virginia stores, car dealerships hospitals, and any tax revenue producing businesses. Travel west to EC, Washington, Williamston and Greenville, Rocky Mount, even Triangle to spend your dollars and help fund NC Schools and goverment rather than Virginia's. Second , North Carolina allowed a pipeline to be built from Lake Gaston to provide Virginia much needed water. Lets double or triple the cost of pumping that resource out of our state. Duck the toll when you just have to go to Virginia. Put up a billboard before the NC VA border saying thanks for visiting NC a no Toll Road state so out of staters will know it is no our demeaner to stiff them as the enter or leave our state. PS. And our roads are still better than VA's

It's being done in the summer because of the tourists visiting? Residents shouldn't have to pay it. We get hurricane re-entry permits, (at least we used to, I haven't gotten one in a while) how about toll cards?

WAKE UP CHESAPEAKE CITY COUNCIL!FROM TWO DALLARS TO SIX DALLARS ONE WAY ?IN this time of recession, your extreme increase makes it difficult on everyone especially those who have to live on a budget. Please reconsider this.

I already hate going to Virginia because I feel like I am putting my life at risk because of all the crazy traffic patterns and unconciderate drivers. But we have to go to the medical facilities here on the outer banks it is protocal for major medical problems. This is possibly a tax that could kill someone trying to get medical help that no one can afford in the first place!

NC should erect toll booths just south of the Border Sation and charge double of what VA charges. There are a lot of jobs on OBX filled by VA workers who take their money north at the end of the day.

just wondering while typing: "why do have to pay even more tax (tolls), when we pay enough to start with". Why shouldnt we expect gubment to manage budget levels instead of having to squeeze more out of us. When my money is gone before the end of the month, that's it, finito, done. I dont have an imaginary pot to pull from. Let them tax the roads, they'll want to tax EVERYTHING else to make ends meet. Cut 'em off.
