Thousands of Dominion Power customers were without power for about an hour Friday night.

Dominion Power's outage map on it's website showed several large power outages on the outer banks and outages in other coastal communities in Dare and Currituck counties affecting about 14,000 people just after 7:00p.m. and by 7:45 p.m. Dominion's Facebook page showed just a couple of customers without power in those areas. WITN received e-mails and calls about a large power outage starting at about 6:40 p.m.

Tideland Electric's Facebook page says Dominion had problems with its transmission line along Highway 12 and was able to re-energize it. Tideland says power has been restored to mainland Dare County and Ocracoke.

In an e-mail to Virginia media, The Dominion Power Media and Community Relations Manager Bonita Billingsley Harris wrote: "In our investigation of the NC power outage tonight, crews found wire down on the North side of the Currituck Sound. It appears to have been caused by complications from salt contamination, but we will not be able to confirm tonight."
