Swim Advisory Issued For Jockey's Ridge

A sign has gone up at a popular Outer Banks location, advising people to stay out of the water.

State environment officials on Wednesday issued a water quality swimming advisory for the Jockey's Ridge sound-side access in Nags Head.

Tests for the past month now show bacteria exceeds state and federal standards for swimming.

State officials say the advisory isn't a beach closing, it only advises people not to swim within 200 feet of the posted sign.

Testing of the Jockey's Ridge site will continue and officials will notify the public when bacteria levels drop to safe levels again.
