Highway 12 Reopens In Dare County

Highway 12 in Dare County has reopened to all traffic as of 9:00 a.m. Thursday. The Sheriff's Department says there is still some water on the highway in places.

Previous Story

Today's storm has closed off southern Dare County once again to passenger vehicles.

High winds and flooding this afternoon closed Highway 12 in both directions from Rodanthe to the southern end of the county. The Department of Transportation says they do not expect the highway to reopen until late Thursday morning.

The Dare County Sheriff's Office has set up a checkpoint in the parking lot of the Pea Island National Wildlife Center to allow high-clearance, 4-wheel-drive vehicles to pass.

The D.O.T. says the road could become completely impassable at high tide.

More than a foot of water was on the highway in many parts, while some parked cars are submerged nearly up to their windows by the flooding.

The D.O.T. is urging all drivers in Dare County to use extreme caution.
