"Steve The Dream" Dies Surfing

Steve Thomas, a local celebrity on the Outer Banks who portrayed "Pamlico Jack" for a local restaurant, has died after an accident while surfing.

A local celebrity on the Outer Banks has died in a surfing accident.

Steve Thomas, known as "Steve the Dream," died Sunday in Kill Devil Hills, according to the Virginian Pilot. The 62-year-old was the man who played "Pamlico Jack" in advertisements for an Outer Banks restaurant.

The paper says beach-goers spotted Thomas face down in the water Sunday afternoon. Authorities told the paper Thomas was brought to the shore but couldn't be revived. An autopsy is pending.

    I'll remember Steve as an energetic positive life force person. He was a stand-up genuine guy, the kind of person you want to hang with. Steve and I took surf trips down to Biarritz in the late 70's when we were both living in Europe. I dedicated a wave to Steve this morning. It pulled together over the reef, peaked up and barreled both ways, overhead, fast, clean and smooth. Adios amigo.

    I hate that this happened. I've met him on a few occasions, at restaurants and out surfing. He was a good guy. RIP Steve!
