SINKHOLE: Highway 264 Closed At Dare-Hyde County-Line

The D.O.T. says U.S. 264 at the Dare-Hyde County-line is closed in both directions.

A sinkhole has developed in the highway making the road impassable.

Motorists trying to get to areas south of Stumpy Point from the north should take U.S. 64 west to Highway 94 south and then take a left onto U.S. 264 east. Those trying to get north of Stumpy Point from the south should take Highway 94 north to U.S. 64 east, then turn right on U.S. 264.

The D.O.T. says the highway could be closed until noon Friday.

Some one needs to ask the people that are controlling the Emergency center where the ICE is for the elderly that have no electricity and why they are not letting their residents know where to pick up the hot meals and supplies. They keep saying to listen to 94.5 but there are many with out power and don't have the luxury of a generator to have the radio access. Please someone help. FEMA has turned people down for help because our county has not called or asked for help. Gov. Perdue was just informed about the situation, that's why we are now being considered for Disaster Relief help

First the wildfire, then the hurricane, and now a sinkhole! It's one thing after another. It's a good thing I only go to Hyde County for something maybe twice out of the year and not anytime soon.

You forgot about the earthquake. Coastal living in NC is not for those that can't hang tough through the tropical season- especially in Kitty Hawk. Depending on the jet stream Katia may be in route for ENC.

Wharf Rat, hate to inform you but Wanchese is not between Stumpy Point and Engelhard, it is above Stumpy Point, there is nothing between Stumpy Point and Engelhard but road, big ditches, and swamp. So I do agree with you that the sinkhole is not really close to Wanchese.

I agree that Wanchese is not between Stumpy Point and Engelhard, but I don't think Wharf Rat was tryin to say it was, he was saying that the sinkhole is nowhere near Wanchese, because it is between Stumpy Point and Engelhard, not that Wanchese was between Stumpy Point and Engelhard.

If you will carefully read my post, you will see that I did not say Wanchese was between Stumpy Point and Engelhard. That is where the sinkhole is located. And Wanchese is not "above" Stumpy point, It is on the south end of Roanoke Island.
