NEW INFO: Foreign Exchange Student Killed In Highway 12 Hit-And-Run

The man who was killed in a hit-and-run in Currituck County Monday has been identified.

Our Norfolk affiliate WAVY reports 22-year-old Asen Zahariev, a foreign exchange student, was the man hit and killed along Highway 12 in Corolla Monday night.

Friends told WAVY reporters Zahariev was from Bulgaria and was working at the local Harris Teeter and Dunkin Donuts.

Zahariev was walking home from work when he was hit and killed that night, friends said.

Friends also said the foreign exchange student was only about a month away from going back home.

The Highway Patrol said 37-year-old Peter Luke Jr. was the driver behind the wheel.

According to jail records, Luke has since bonded out on charges of a fatal hit and run.

A driver is behind bars after authorities say he was involved in a hit-and-run that killed a pedestrian Monday night.

The incident happened around 11 p.m., according to North Carolina Highway Patrol.

A man was walking north along the shoulder of Highway 12 in Corolla in Currituck County when he was hit by a vehicle, that was also traveling north. The vehicle left the scene and the pedestrian died from their injuries.

The driver, now identified as 37-year-old Peter Luke Jr., went to the fire department in Corolla Tuesday morning and told authorities he thought he hit a deer the night before.

He's charged with hit-and-run, causing serious injury or death. A blood sample was sent to the SBI in Raleigh. If he tests positive for any illegal drugs, he will receive additional charges.
