A new hiking trail has opened in Nags Head Woods to provide easier access to nature for wheelchair users, parents pushing strollers and older adults.
The Virginian Pilot reports the flat, one-mile trail opened Wednesday. It loops around a picturesque pond and offers several viewing areas, including one for catch-and-release fishing.
Another platform faces the Albemarle Sound and provides a glimpse of Roanoke Island usually only viewable from higher elevations.
The $200,000 project was funded by donations and grants.
The Nature Conservancy worked with the town of Kill Devil Hills to build the trail. There are two paved handicapped parking spaces at the trail's entrance.
