New Ferry To Be Christened On Outer Banks Run

A new ferry boat making the daily run across Pamlico Sound between the mainland and the Outer Banks is being officially christened.

The state Ferry Division says a naming ceremony will be held Monday for the Motor Vessel Swan Quarter at the state shipyard in Manns Harbor.

The 220-foot-long boat can carry 50 vehicles and 300 passengers. It will be used on the routes from Swan Quarter to Ocracoke and Cedar Island to Ocracoke.

The ferry is the first of two vessels being built by Orange, Tex.-based Orange Shipbuilding Co.

It will join the current fleet of four ferries on the Pamlico Sound routes.

All the ferries are named, and most are for coatal locations, but also a few key officials of the past. Each bear a logo and paint scheme of a college in NC.

I thought they named all the ferry's after North Carolina Universities. I guess they ran out of names, or have discontuned that practice.

I worked at the shipyard 5 years. I don`t know of any that were actually named after a university, although they had logos of different schools on them.

Finally, there is a ferry carrying the Swan Quarter name. After all the years that ferries have made the trip from the Swan Quarter port, it is fitting to name a ferry after this town. I lived in Swan Quarter for several years and traveled to and from Ocracoke. I still go to Ocracoke from that site two or three times a year. May there always be safe travel for the crew and the passengers. Enjoy the new ride!
