Man, Uncle Swim 2.5 Hours To Shore After Kayak Capsizes

A man who authorities thought was missing today off the Outer Banks is safe, after a 2-1/2 hour swim to shore that happened two days ago.

Matthew Cornelison of Virginia Beach called WAVY-TV this afternoon after the station aired a story about his kayak washing up on shore this morning in Kitty Hawk. The U.S. Coast Guard and others began searching for the fisherman, not knowing he and his uncle had already made it safely to shore on Sunday.

Cornelison tells WAVY that the two were out on the kayak Sunday when it tipped over and took on water. The two then decided to swim back to shore. He told the television station that winds were blowing off shore, so the task of getting back to land was made even that more difficult.

When they reached shore, lifeguards took a report of what happened and Cornelison thought that was the end of it. That is, until he turned the television on at his Outer Banks vacation home this morning and quickly discovered that the search was underway.
