A Virginia man on vacation with his family was buried alive while digging a tunnel in the sand.
The National Park Service says it happened around 2:40 p.m. Monday south of Salvo on Hatteras Island.
Spokeswoman Cyndy Holda says family, friends and bystanders tried to pull 49-year-old David Frasier out before rescue crews arrived. She said the Fredericksburg man was buried for approximately 10 minutes and they were unsuccessful in resuscitation efforts.
Holda says five to six feet of sand fell on the man as he was trying to dig the underground tunnel connecting two large holes that had been dug on the beach.
In 1997 another Virginia man died in Buxton when an eight-foot deep hole collapsed on him.
