A power outage in Hyde County has forced mainland schools to be closed today.
School officials say they do not know what caused the power to go out around 6:30 a.m. High winds gusting to near tropical storm force were present in that area during that time, and Hyde County is under a wind advisory today.
The Hyde County Sheriff's Office says a transmitter in Swan Quarter blew out.
Tideland EMC says power went out around 6:30 a.m. and was restored around 7:45 a.m.
