Highway 64 Widening Project Meetings

The state Department of Transportation is meeting with residents about plans to widen 27 miles of U.S. Highway 64 in Tyrrell and Dare counties.

The agency says the project will improve traffic in eastern North Carolina and bring the highway to modern standards. The highway will be widened from two to four lanes, and a four-lane bridge will be built over the Alligator River.

The project is estimated to cost $392 million. The agency says the design includes wildlife crossings under the road as well as fencing to direct animals to them. The agency plans to create and restore twice as many wetlands as the project impacts.

Monday's meeting will be at the East Lake Community Center in Manns Harbor. Tuesday's will be at St. John's Baptist Church in Columbia.
