With erosion as a threatening agent, the former foundation stones of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse may be receiving a new home near the lighthouse by Memorial Day.
According to a National Park Service Spokeswoman Thursday, staff will put material between the stones that will keep grass from growing and be soft enough for people to walk on.
To protect against erosion, the roughly 30 former foundation stones were left behind when the lighthouse was moved inland 15 years ago.
The stones will be engraved with the names of the 83 light keepers, courtesy of a non-profit group.
