Authorities say fireworks last night may have sparked a marsh fire that's burning in Dare County.
Fire marshal Steve Kovacs says 30 to 40 acres of marsh is burning off Little Colington Island. A huge plume of smoke can be seen from Kill Devil Hills.
The fire was first noticed in the remote section and officials say it doesn't pose a threat to any homes or buildings.
State foresters have reached the area by boat and they have set controlled back fires to limit the smoke impact.
The fire is under control and authorities say since it is surrounded by water they may let it burn itself out. Areas of Kill Devil Hills will experience smoke throughout the day, according to Dare County.
