Cape Hatteras Ranked #5 Best Beach In U.S.

Just in time for Memorial Day, here's some news you probably already realized -- an Eastern Carolina beach is once again on the best beaches list this year.

Cape Hatteras came in at number 5 on this years best beaches by "Dr. Beach" Steven Leatherman.

Leatherman, a professor and lab director of Coastal Research at Florida International University, says Hatteras provides some of the best board surfing along the East Coast. Last year Cape Hatteras was fourth on the list.

What's #1? Siesta Beach in Sarasota, Florida.

People tend to forget that our local economy is tourism! I've lived here 34 years and have been on both sides of the road so to speak! Our restaurant and business owners rely on tourism to make profits, the locals tend to get upset with all the traffic which is understandable to say the least! Look at it this way, no tourist, no money! Ocracoke, get it together. If they took the time to take a ferry to get to the island, i'm sure they spent some money eating at the restaurants and shopping in the stores! Afterall if there wasn't such a high demand for the best beaches, the reality companies would also be hurting. The simple fact is; tourism is what fuels our economy, like it or not!

It was one of the worst things to hit Ocracoke. Those of us local already knew of its beauty, we didn't need an award to prove it. Just turned traffic into the Jersey turnpike the following summer. Most of the visitors were rude and really didn't flood the economy that much. They blew all their dollars north at Wings and other tacky shops.

And because some park ranger from Montana saw a couple of shore birds frigging on the beach, the entire Cape Point area is closed. Going to be hard to enjoy the "#5 Best Beach in the U. S." ain't it? Way to go NPS.
