An 800 pound alligator was hit by a vehicle and killed late Sunday night.

NBC affiliate WAVY reports it happened on Highway 64 in Dare County, between Miltail Road and Creef Cut.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Officer Jay Eddy told the station that the alligator was 12'4" long and weighed at least 800 pounds.

Troopers say the gator was hit by a minivan, which suffered between $3,000 and $4,000 in damage.

WAVY says heavy machinery was brought in to remove the big reptile.
