Former Sheriff's Deputy Case Continued

The case of a former sheriff's deputy was continued Monday in Hyde County.

Mike Gaskill was fired for allegedly tasering two people.

The indictment says the former deputy willingly and feloniously restrained Roland Cooper on April 8th, 2008 and assaulted him by repeatedly using a taser.

The second case happened on June 20th, 2008. That indictment says Tyree Bond was assaulted when the deputy used a taser on him for 24 seconds.

A court clerk says Gaskill appeared in court, but the case was continued until January 4th.

Just to clarify once and for all...if a law enforcement officer is charged with a crime, especially a felony, a judge can temporarily remove that officer from office pending the outcome of the case. This could affect the officer's certification. Therefore, has anyone considered the fact that maybe the sheriff "fired" him to help him with means of income while this is pending. Think outside the box people, what is someone eligible for when they get "fired" from a job....food for thought!

Oh yeah people tasing is not the way. A taser can be just as powerful as a gun and in fact it is a type of gun.Citzen shouldn't have to almost lose their life when all he got to do is take them to jail now that ain't right. Now it sound like to me yall don't just want them off the streets yall want these people dead & I don't know what they have done & it ain't my business but I know it ain't worth them losing their life over.It would help if yall know that people make mistakes even you.So don't make excuse for Gaskill to almost kill those men.

Shyneekwa, I hope that you are being funny with your grammer, and you really dont speak that way. I agree with Michelle, he shouldnt be fired until the final disposition from the court; but that's the problem with working for a sheriff's office, you can be fired at any given time. I met him back in 2008 while attending a class and talking to him then, I wouldnt think that he would do something like this without justification. Gaskill seemed to be a very proactive officer with a lot of knowledge and he loved his job and the citizens he served. It's funny how you people who dont know anything about the incident, can speak down on him. Before you speak down on this man remember that he was once a sworn deputy, who put his life on the line to protect your life. To all who don't know the laws and how the system works, please refrain from posting stupid comments. I hope that everything works out for him and he will be able to continue his law enforcement career.

I do not understand or agree with the repremand that this deputy received. Why would you fire the man with out waiting for the outcome of the courts ? You are going on alligations. Why was he not put into a diffrent job status or even sent home, but with pay ? Just because he had true bills of inditment come back on him, does not mean he is guilty. This only means enough votes came back from the grand jury. I would like to see the Sheriff stand behind his men and women until he nows they have done wrong. Then by all means do what needs to be done. Officer's need to be backed on their actions that they take out in the field, unless facts have been proven that they acted inappropiate.I for one would like to commend this officer on the job that he was doing. I recentley was told by my son that before this happened , he had been stopped by this officer for drinking and driving.. and yes he had every right to stop my son, handcuff my son and take him to jail.

I really dont think that Gaskill would do this unless he had a legitimate reason. We need to give all criminals a good SHOCK TREATMENT if you ask me.It will be throwed out of court.Case dismissed!
