The N.C. Department of Transportation says in order to pave the way to widen U.S. 64 between Columbia and U.S. 264, crews have started studying wildlife travel patterns.
Widening the highway would make an easier drive to the Outer Banks.
The NC-DOT says it's considering creating wildlife crossings to improve safety for drivers. There were five dozen animal related accidents in Tyrrell and Dare Counties in 2007. Most of them involved deer.
