Changes For State Ferries

The North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Ferry Division has announced fewer runs on five of its seven routes. Officials say both budget constraints and staffing requirements from the U.S. Coast Guard.

The new schedule begins April 14.

Before making the final decisions on what to change, officials say
the Ferry Division sought input from riders on both the Cherry Branch-Minnesott Beach and Bayview-Aurora routes to minimize inconvenience to commuters. The Cherry Branch ferry transports some workers to Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in Havelock. The Bayview Ferry transports some workers to PCS Phosphate in Aurora. The number of runs on both routes has been cut.

North Carolina ferry customers are also now able to order tickets online.

The state Transportation Department said tickets for the ferries can be purchased online, in addition to being purchased by phone, beginning Wednesday.

Toll ferries that accept reservations include Cedar Island, Swan Quarter and Ocracoke. Fees are $15, $30 and $45 for one-day travel.

Commuter passes also have been made available for online purchase, also beginning Wednesday. When a driver presents an online receipt, his or her car will have a sticker applied at the ferry terminal.

What about the people that use the ferries to get back and forth to work? They are to pay per day to go to work? That is crazy. Don't our taxes already pay for the ferry system? So now we are going to be charged for it in taxes and out of pocket!?
