North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper Darrell Pugh tells WITN that 94 year-old Emily Gibbs of Goldsboro died in a two car accident along Highway 94 in Hyde County.
The accident happened around 2:30pm Sunday afternoon.
Pugh says the car Gibbs was in was traveling south on Highway 94 when it hit the back of another car stopped in the road.
Pugh says the four people in the 1999 Toyota Avalon were stopped on the highway coming across Lake Mattamuskeet. All four people in that car were taken to the hospital. No one there is believed to have suffered any serious injuries.
Gibbs was in a 1997 Toyota Avalon sitting in the back seat and wearing a seat belt according to Highway Patrol. They tell us her leg was broken and there were no other visible injuries. Pugh says it not clear if it was the impact or internal injuries which lead to her death.
She was pronounced dead on the scene. The two people in the car with Gibbs were also taken to the hospital. Pugh says they had no major injuries.
The driver of the car Gibbs was in told investigators he did not realize the other car was stopped when he hit it from behind.
Both drivers were cited by State Troopers.
