With Hurricane Season Here, Experts Urge You To Prepare

The Atlantic hurricane season is officially underway, and experts say now is the time to prepare, even though it's predicted to be a below average season with one to two major storms.

Lonnie Smith has been running the Surf City family campground in North Topsail beach for 24-years and he's seen a lot, but he will never forget the summer of 1996 when two hurricanes wiped out much of this area.

That year, Hurricane Bertha hit in July and Fran hit in September, causing an estimated 500 million dollars in damage.

Fourteen people were killed in our state due to Fran, mostly due to downed trees on cars and homes.

The Onslow County Emergency Services director says now is a good time to cut down dead trees or limbs so they don't fall in a storm or knock down power lines. And Norman Bryson says check your insurance to make sure you have the proper coverage. He says, "While you may have a policy that actually covers wind, hail and falling precipitation, you may not have one that covers flooding, which is rising water. Those are two separate categories. You have to take, also if you have something like sinkholes in the area, subsidence insurance night be something you want to look into."
