TROOPERS: Beer Drinking Chase With Mom On The Phone

State troopers say a man they were chasing was on the phone with his mother while drinking beer, and that's why he wouldn't stop for them early Saturday morning.

Onslow County deputies began chasing Christopher Leffler of Maysville and then Highway Patrol troopers took over. They say Leffler's car had a fictitious license plate.

Troopers say they tried two or three "pit maneuvers", but each time Leffler managed to regain control of his car and continued evading lawmen. After about 17 minutes, troopers used three vehicles to perform a rolling stop. One of the cruisers was hit in the process.

Leffler had to be tasered, according to troopers.

Troopers say the 29-year-old man, on probation for drug charges, told them the last time he got arrested he didn't get a chance to talk to his mom for 2 to 3 days. He told troopers if he was going to jail, then he wanted to talk to his mother first.

Leffler's been charged with felony fleeing to elude, DWI, fictitious registration plate, no insurance and beer drinking by driver during chase.

The chase never went over 70 miles per hour, and troopers say the man stopped at each stop sign and even used his blinker.
