Keep Onslow Beautiful Announces Spring Beach Cleanup

Keep Onslow Beautiful will host the spring beach cleanup for the 25th Anniversary of the North Carolina Big Sweep on Saturday, May 14th starting at 8am at the North Topsail Beach Town Park. Volunteers should meet at the picnic tables near the tennis courts and will be sent to several locations on the island to clean up the beach as well as the sound side underneath the Hwy 210 bridge.

The first 100 volunteers will receive a free reusable water bottle or reusable tote bag. Water, sunscreen, gloves, and everything needed for the cleanup will be provided. Keep Onslow Beautiful is also offering SAT credit hours for all Onslow County High School volunteers.

North Carolina Big Sweep, the North Carolina component of the International Coastal Cleanup, is an event in which volunteers from all 100 counties in the state and approximately 90 countries worldwide come together to clean up our land and waterways. The purpose is to rid the environment of litter by promoting environmental education and coordinating an annual statewide cleanup. Onslow County participates in the event each year on the 2nd Saturday in May and 2nd Saturday in October.

No registration is required. Volunteers can arrive any time between 8am and 11:30am to participate. For more information, call Lisa Grant at (910) 330-3140.

North Carolina Big Sweep was founded as Beach Sweep in 1987 by Dr. Lundie Spence of the North Carolina Sea Grant College Program. The Sweep was a major success in it's first year, attracting over 1,000 volunteers and collecting over 14 tons of debris, and has continued to grow and expand inland. In 1989, the public-private partnership officially became Big Sweep, the nation’s first statewide waterway cleanup. Several years ago, the mission was expanded to include not just waterways but the entire environment. Since it was founded, North Carolina Big Sweep has had more than 300,000 volunteers and collected over 10.3 million pounds of trash from North Carolina's environment.
