NEW INFO: Fire Department Says Church Fire Intentionally Set

A fire which destroyed a church that was under construction was arson, according to investigators.

Jacksonville Fire Inspector Brian Kelly says the blaze Thursday morning at the Wings of Faith Ministries was intentionally set.

The church fire on Hargett Street was first noticed around 1:30 a.m. and it took firefighters about 90 minutes to bring it under control.

Kelly says the A.T.F. has joined them, the SBI and city police in the investigation.

They are reaching out to the community for help in solving this arson fire. Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 910-938-3273.

Elder Joseph Morgan, pastor and founder, says they bought the building in 2005 and had planned to move in this coming April. He said the church had no insurance and said the loss is estimated around $200,000.

The State Bureau of Investigation arson team is helping to investigate a suspicious fire that destroyed a church early this morning in Jacksonville.

Firefighters were called out around 1:30 a.m. to the Wings of Faith Ministries on Hargett Street. Investigators say the church is a total loss.

No one was at the church at the time of the fire and there was no power to the church as it was undergoing renovations.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control in 90 minutes. Two city firefighters were treated for heat-related injuries, with one of them hospitalized. Authorities say that firefighters remains in good condition at Onslow Memorial Hospital.
