Pender County Fire 78 Percent Contained

The North Carolina Forest Service says a blaze that has burned for more than a month in northeastern Pender County is now more than three-quarters under control.

Officials say rain and thunderstorms on the northern and eastern sides of the fire Saturday have helped slow the fire's growth. It's now 78 percent contained.

The wildfire has burned more than 31,000 acres since it started with a lightning strike June 19.

Officials said they didn't think ground-level smoke would be a hazard for drivers Sunday.
